Introduction to the GLASS Charter
The GLASS Charter is the safety initiative of the UK Glass Industry. It was introduced to reduce accidents within the industry by helping members to improve their health and safety performance. Members of the GLASS Charter receive best practice and ideas exchanges, advice, legislation updated together with facts and figures about accident trends throughout the Glass Industry.
The following target has been adopted by UK glass companies that have signed up to the GLASS Charter.
"Organisations within the UK Glass Industry will contribute towards a 30% or equivalent reduction in lost time accidents."
Background to the GLASS Charter
With the slowing of improvement in Health & Safety performance by UK industry, the Deputy Prime Minister announced in 1999 the Revitalising Health & Safety initiative. Its prime aim was to reduce the impact of health & safety failures by 30% over 10 years. All industry sectors were encouraged to come forward.
The Glass Industry recognised the need for good health & safety performance and formed a steering group comprising representatives from the glass industry, British Glass, the Glass and Glazing Federation and the Health & Safety Executive. The result was the launch of the GLASS Charter which is open to all organisations within the UK glass industry. The focus is on the importance of health and safety within the workplace.
